According to one study, around 66 people moved to Nashville per day in 2023. Whether you’re putting down roots in Music City or heading off on another adventure, packing is an integral part of the process.
Moving can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Today, we’re sharing our top tips to help make your next journey go as smoothly as possible. From home moving and packing to unpacking, organizing, and decoration — here’s how to do it right.
1. Declutter First
Moving is a great time to pare down your belongings. As you box up each room, think about your new home organization.
Will you need this item in the next space? Have you used it in the past two years? If you’re shaking your head no, then it’s time to toss or donate it.
2. Be Strategic
Once you have your items down to the essentials, it’s time to start packing them. Instead of throwing all of it into random boxes, we suggest trying these simple packing strategies:
- Start with items you don’t need right away
- Use correctly sized boxes
- Group similar items together
- Use color-coded tape and label each box by room
Remember that this step can take longer than you think. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
3. Get the Right Tools
One of our top moving tips is to gather all of the supplies you need before you begin. Some of the most common items you’ll need include:
- Boxes
- Packaging tape
- Bubble wrap
- Sturdy scissors
- Utility knife
- Permanent marker
You may also need blankets for wrapping breakable items like heirlooms and mirrors. If you plan on loading the moving truck yourself, a handcart can be helpful.
4. Unpack Carefully
There’s an art to unpacking efficiently. While it might be tempting to rip into the boxes as soon as you arrive, try to use a system.
Start by going down your inventory list to make sure everything’s in place. If you’ve organized all of your belongings by room, this step is much easier. Then, start with the essentials and slowly work your way around the house.
We recommend starting in the kitchen before moving on to bedrooms and bathrooms. Utility spaces like the mud room can usually wait a few days since those items are less essential.
5. Hire a Team
Sure, you can take care of all of this yourself. However, moving goes much smoother when you’re not the one in charge. Instead of juggling all of the logistics, why not hire professional movers to take care of everything for you?
