Every year, around 40 million people in the United States pack up and move out to new locations. If you plan on moving out of your home, you might be asking yourself the important question: How many moving boxes do I need? This indeed is an important question for several reasons.

If you don’t have enough boxes, you won’t be able to pack all of your belongings away. On the other hand, if you have too many boxes, then you will have wasted money and space on those extra boxes. So, how can you figure out exactly how many moving boxes you need?

Keep reading more below to find out.

Consider the Size of Your Home

The best way to figure out how many moving boxes you need is to think about the size of your current home. As a general rule, the larger a home is, the more moving boxes you will need. The size of your home will also determine your box sizes as well.

For example, suppose you have a house with three bedrooms and that there are around four people living there, including you. You will need to pack away not only everything in your bedrooms but also in the kitchen, living room, office, and so on. For this kind of house, you may need a total of 90 boxes to pack everything away.

You may need only around 20 large boxes while you will need far more small and medium boxes. This may sound like a lot of moving boxes, which is true, but a large house will require a lot of boxes to pack everything away. On the other hand, if you live alone in a studio apartment (or a one-bedroom apartment), you won’t need nearly as many boxes.

You may only need a total of 30 boxes. For example, you may only need 10 small boxes, 10 medium boxes, and 10 large boxes. Of course, the exact number of boxes you need will depend on how much stuff you have.

Consider the Size of Your Boxes

Packing a box is an art form and if you can master it, you might be able to downsize the number of boxes you need to move out. For example, if you opt for many more large boxes rather than small boxes, you can reduce the total number of boxes.

Of course, if you do this, you will have to get much better at utilizing all the space in large boxes. This is possible, but you may have to experiment a bit with filling up large boxes. This is not to mention that large boxes that are completely filled can be very heavy and hard to lift.

But if you do your packing right and work with moving companies, you can easily do away with a dozen boxes or so.
